Non-Toxic Herbal Pesticides

One of the major problems organic farmers face is how to limit crop losses due to pest damage. Naturale-Agro, in association with researchers in Turkey and the United States, has developed and will soon mass-produce a line of natural, non-toxic, plant-based pesticides: BIOFUME^TM,  BIOFUME^TM970, BIOFUME^TM975, and BIOBUG^TM (details below). 

These products can be formulated into a water-based emulsion, which means they can be used in existing irrigation equipment, and are effective at relatively low concentrations. The pesticide activity in these products come entirely from combinations of different essential oils. These essential oils are completely biodegradable, and when used as formulated, have no known toxicity against humans or other vertebrates when used as directed. They are not registered as pesticides by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

BIOFUME™: The 

superior methyl bromide alternative

Our products perform as well as or even better than currently prescribed treatments. For example, methyl bromide is an ozone-destroying agricultural chemical used to fumigate soils. It will be phased out of use in the next few years, and researchers have been scrambling to come up with an effective replacement. Some of the methyl bromide alternatives currently under investigation may still impact the ozone layer, while others are very likely to contaminate groundwater. 

BIOFUME™, on the other hand, contains a wide variety of volatile ingredients which have potent antibacterial, antifungal, nematicidal and/or insecticidal properties, and yet which do not persist in nature and do not seem to have long-term negative impacts on  soil microflora (please refer to our International Workshop: Alternatives to Methyl Bromide for the Southern European Countries presentation for details). In numerous field experiments, BIOFUME™ has been demonstrated to perform as well as or better than methyl bromide or Dazomet™, a synthetic fumigant manufactured by BASF which is currently considered the least toxic alternative to methyl bromide.

BIOFUME™

• for soil fumigation: proven to be an effective and safe methyl bromide replacement (see above)
• can be mixed into irrigation water and applied to soil using standard irrigation equipment
• like methyl bromide, BIOFUME™ should be used in conjunction with solarization

BIOFUME™970

• for the control of plant diseases (some pest control) via direct foliar and root drench applications
• can be mixed into water and applied using standard spraying equipment
• proven to be effective at controlling fire blight and other diseases in field studies
• when diluted appropriately, no phytotoxicity is observed

BIOBUG™

• for the control of plant pests (some disease control), via direct foliar and root drench applications on affected areas
• can be mixed into water and applied using standard spraying equipment
• proven to have activity against aphids, spider mites, nematodes and other plant pests
• when diluted appropriately, no phytotoxicity is observed

BIOFUME™975

• for the control of storage pests and pathogens via fumigation
• can be mixed into water and applied using standard fumigation equipment
• proven to have activity against Aspergillus flavus (aflatoxin producer) and other storage pathogens and insect pests
• proven to leave negligible residues on the skins and peels of stored fruits and vegetables
• completely non-toxic, even if residues are present and ingested
